HOSPERSA CONVENES ITS NATIONAL CONGRESS
Hospersa is requesting members of the media to attend the opening day of its National Congress on 27 November 2018 at Saint George Hotel and Conference Centre, Pretoria. The upcoming congress will also mark the Union’s 60 years celebration which will reach its peak when the Union elects new National Office Bearers on the last day of congress.
The Hospersa National Congress will take place from 27 – 29 November 2018 and will be attended by close to two hundred (200) delegates representing more than sixty five thousand (65 000) Hospersa members in the public and private sector.
On the opening day, the keynote address will be delivered by Ms Mary Malete, a Hospersa stalwart with over fifty (50) years experience in the country’s healthcare system as a professional nurse, unionist and advocate for an improved health care service. Ms Malete is a former Hospersa Vice-President as well as the first female President of the Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA), elected in 1992, which was a first for labour organisations at the time.
Other guests attending the opening day includes the Public Service Coordinating Bargaining Council (PSCBC) General Secretary, Mr Frikkie de Bruin, the Public Health and Social Development Sectoral Bargaining Council (PHSDSBC) General Secretary, Mr Nompumelelo Sibiya, the FEDUSA General Secretary Dr Dennis George as well as the Union’s key stakeholders.
Since its last congress in 2013, Hospersa has consistently addressed staff shortages, corruption and maladministration as well as Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) transgressions especially in the ailing Department of Health (DoH). The delegates attending this congress are expected to come up with congress resolutions which will be the focal point for the Union’s activities over the next five (5) years. The last day of congress will see the election of new National Office Bearers made up of the President, Vice-Presidents and the National Treasurer positions.
